The Twilight Zone

Night of the Meek

Episode 47 - Premiere on December 23, 1960

Review by Roger D. Noriega

It is Christmas Eve and at the local department store, shoppers are awaiting the return of Santa Claus. We find our Santa Claus at the local watering hole and he is still on lunch at 6:30 P.M. - he is already thirty minutes late! Our Santa asks the barkeep: "Why isn't there a real Santa Claus?" The barkeep has no answer, nor does he care.

"Mr. Henry Corwin is about to discover magic . . . magic only found in the Twilight Zone."

Corwin returns late, his boss recognizes he's drunk and threatens him to get his act together or lest he be fired. As the kids come to ply him with their Christmas wishes, he falls off his chair and creates quite a stir. A very offended mother stalks off, tells the manager that she will never shop there again and this leads the manager, Mr. Dundee to fire Henry Corwin on the spot. Corwin apologizes for his behavior and reminds Dundee about what Christmas should be - Dundee doesn't listen or care. Corwin drinks to spare himself the reality of his world and just once, he says, he wishes he could bring Christmas to the meek, just once.

As he walks home, he finds a cat and a bag. This bags contains wonderful gifts and he shares these gifts with kids and friends all around his neighborhood. He is arrested, but the bag reveals nothing and he is released upon which the bag begins to give again. The bag finally empties and he again walks home only to find a slay and reindeer with an elf - they've been waiting for him.

"Mr. Corwin becomes what he wished for and now Mr. Corwin brings joy to the world."

A touching story, well acted, but bad production values and the film style is atrocious. Roger's rating: 2.5 out of 5.
