Cruise to star in 'War of the Worlds'
HOLLYWOOD, -- Tom Cruise will star in Stephen Spielberg's
"The War of the Worlds" trilogy in a deal that could net
the actor $350 million. "No expense will be spared.
Spielberg wants to make it the film of the decade," an
insider at Paramount, which is funding the project, told
Britain's Sunday Times. The deal, which gives Cruise 10
percent of the box-office take and a share of merchandise
profits, could double his fortune and make him the highest-
earning actor in history. The first film, due in theaters
next summer, is expected to draw $3.5 billion from ticket
and DVD sales, earning the "Mission: Impossible" actor
$175 million, Paramount said. The two sequels could net
cruise another $87.5 million each. The trilogy is based
on Wells' 1898 novel about Martians whose attack on London
is thwarted when the aliens catch cold.
