BEING HUMAN

Throughout the Star Trek: New Frontier saga, Mark McHenry, the navigator on the U.S.S. Excalibur, has demonstrated abilities beyond those of the somewhat odd human being he appears to be. When the inhabitants of an innocent solar system are confronted by a menace linked to the source of McHenryıs powers, his true heritage is revealed at last.

Meanwhile, Zak Kebron is going through a startling change that will leave him both more and less than he was.

This is Peter David at his best. If only the other series had writers like him, the stories would be so much better. Not to detract from the other writers, as they all do wonderful jobs with their works, but with one writer doing this series, the plot-lines are concrete and easy to follow and the interest of the reader is constantly paying attention and the reading is riveting, to say the least. I know that it's just not possible for one writer to do something like TOS, TNG, Voyager, and even DS9. The writers who do the stories in those series do absolutely wonderful jobs and only set the course for the future writers, with their additions to the story characters, some of whom even eventually return for future engagements. As long as Pocket Books continue their excellence with their choice of writers, the Star Trek series of novels will continue to have a long and successful life. Now on to the review:

Just a quick suggestion before reading this novel, you may want to check out the episode on TOS titled, Who Mourns for Adonais? Believe me, once you read this book you will understand.

The prelude of the story sets in motion events that happen later in the book. Although no names are mentioned, other than the parent's first names, you'll know whose is being told here. Pay attention as you do read it though, you may actually find yourself going back for some more information.

Finally, after three and a half years and twelve books, the true origins of Mark McHenry are revealed! This one is definitely worth waiting for.

Zak Kebron is still searching for answers to the McHenry riddle and nwo he's beginning to change as well, but the change starts slowly and then develops during the course of the story. Unfortunately, the time change may not be revealed until a later book.

Soleta is still coming to terms with her heritage, half Vulcan and half Romulan, and still hiding that fact from the crew of the Excalibur. Though the truth seems to be lurking on the edge of eventual discovery.

Meanwhile, Si Cwan, and his sister Kalinda, face circumstances that, while desperately wanted by Si Cwan, turn out to be not quite what he expected them to be.

Once more, Peter David is the master storyteller here. Hinting around just enough to keep the reader on edge-of-his-seat with the material, and desperately wanting the resolution to be revealed at the same time.

I had to give this novel my highest rating of 10! It's that good, believe me. I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did and will eagerly anticipate the next chapter in the continuing adventure of Star Trek: New Frontier, and the crew of the USS Excalibur.

As usual, New Frontier: Being human is published by Pocket Books and retails for $6.99, $9.99 in Canada.
