But is he?

Investigating the mysterious destruction of a new android created by Starfleet, Data and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise™ uncover startling secrets stretching back to the galaxy's dim past. That knowledge is coveted by beings who will stop at nothing to control it, and will force Data to redefine himself as he learns the hidden history of artificial intelligence.

Review by James Farmer (minor spoilers)

Well, I was a little leery of reading this one, to say the least. The blurb on the back of the book did get me interested though, so I decided to go ahead and get started with it. Boy, am I glad I did!

To me, this is the best book about Data and his place in Starfleet since METAMORPHOSIS first hit the stands many years ago. Back then, Data had a wish to be human, and in a way, he got his wish granted. I love the story then and still wish they'd do a film on that one.

With IMMORTAL COIL, we see another side of Data. He's dealing with the new emotions chip, when he learns of the death of his "mother" and dealing with those strange emotions are hard for him at this time.

Perhaps Jeffrey Land has given us the definitive Data story thus far. We learn some of Data's creator's past and some of what he may have learned on his path to create Data in the first place. After all, much of this storyline takes place when Noonien Soong is much younger and still hadn't created Data. We learn that the search to create androids was happening long before Soong started his work.

If any of you remember Flint from TOS, then you're already familiar with some of the history that has happened, which directly leads up to this story. A lot of Star Trek history is re-visited in this novel, and you'd better be paying attention when it's revealed, or you'll definitely miss something here and have to go back and re-read some of the portions.

There are surprises galore as well and I'm not about to reveal them here, sufficed to say, you'll love them all and be happy at the outcome of this volume. Definitely one of the better Star Trek books in the Next Generation line and well worth your time. Sit back, read, and enjoy.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION: IMMORTAL COIL gets my highest rating, a 10!

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENREATION: IMMORTAL COIL is published by Pocket Books and retails for $6.99 in the U.S. and $9.99 in Canada.
