Review by James Farmer (minor spoilers)

With this installment, the storyline is easier to follow, as it's not dealing with so many characters as the TNG installment did. Sure, it's packed with action, but it's all eventually explained and falls neatly into place. While a lot of the action does take place on DS9, the action from the station is fast-paced and the book gets hard to put down once you get started on it. I should know, this one only took me about three days to read, and I only stopped when I absolutely had to.

The story line in this one involves the rescue of the world threatened by the radiation orbiting it, as explained in the previous book. The crew of DS9 is heavily involved with the transfer of the citizens and keeping more of the waste from being transported to the planet's orbit.

The bulk of the story is told in two parts, the first with the evacuation of the planet and the other dealing with Kira and Taran'atar, the Jem'Hadar now assigned to the station by Odo. This character is proving to be the most interesting in this series.

The story lines also involve Nog and his abilities to work on the systems of the ships and to think of things others have not. Again, Nog is going to be a cornerstone of future DS9 books and well worth watching his evolution.

This installment of the Gateway series is another great read and well worth the time to sit and enjoy it for its sheer pleasure. This installment gets a 9, for being one of the best DS9 books I've read in a long time.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Gateways: Demons of Air and Darkness is published by Pocket Books and retails for $6.99 in the U.S. and $9.99 in Canada.
