Star Trek: New Frontier
Gateways: No Man's Land
Book 6 of 7
By Peter David
Description
Missing for two hundred millennia, the legendary
Iconians have returned, bringing with them the secret of
interdimensional teleportation across vast interstellar
distances. Awakened once more, their ancient Gateways
are rewriting the map of the galaxy, and nowhere more
than in the New Frontier®....
A century ago, the imperial Thallonians separated two
feuding alien races, depositing each of them on a new
world safely distant from that of their ancestral
enemies. Now, however, the Gateways have made it
possible for the long dormant blood feud to begin anew.
Captain Mackenzie Calhoun of the U.S.S. Excalibur
and his partner, Captain Elizabeth Shelby of the
U.S.S. Trident, find themselves fighting a losing
battle to keep the horrific violence from escalating,
even as they gradually realize the catastrophic danger
posed by the Gateways themselves!

Review by James Farmer (minor spoilers)
Well, I must say this: this chapter of the Gateways series is perhaps the
best of the six that I've read thus far. Not only did this one make a lot more
sense, but it dealt with a major theme throughout the book and handled it quite
well, too.
The book opens in the bed chamber of the royal family of the planet Aeron,
where the "Zarn" and his "Zarna" are discussing the ascendency of their son to
the throne. But, just as a major decision has been made, a gateway suddenly
appears in the bed chamber and the enemy of the Aeron's, the Markanians, jump
through the gateway and begins to murder the royal family, with the exception of
one survivor, a 9 year-old girl.
Thus begins, as I said, the best of the series thus far.
Peter David had most definitely out done even his earlier volumes in the New
Frontier series with this one. The writing is getting better with each volume
and the plotlines from earlier tomes continues here as well. The conflict among
the crew, and only the likes of Mr. David can actually do them justice with the
"life" he's given them so far.
The gateways have been the key to this series thus far, with each volume
dealing with the events in their own way. While, in my opinion, some of the
books have strayed from the intent of the series, all have been good stories.
However, with this volume, the storyline is the strongest to date and the action
is fast-paced and non-stop. The reader, such as myself, finds it hard to put
this one down to do other daily chores. For once, even the ending didn't
disappoint me, because I was truly left hanging here and can't wait to see what
happens.
To tell you more about this story would only spoil your fun. Needless to say,
you'll enjoy this one much more than the others. I know I did.
If I could give this volume of the Gateway series anything higher then the
customer 10, I would do it in a heartbeat! This one is absolutely the best in
the series and I am eagerly waiting to finish this series with Volume 7, What
Lay Beyond.
Star Trek: New Frontier, Gateways: Cold War, is published by Pocket
