Review by James Farmer (minor spoilers)
Well, looks like my wish for a series of novels on the new Star Trek series
Enterprise, has come true, and what a better way to start the original series
then with a new book of an altogether new mission?
Captain Archer and his crew have the honor for a first contact with an
unknown race, and he's thrilled about being the first an from Earth to have this
honor. The planet is kind of like Earth, with slight differences, in atmosphere,
but breathable. There are two known races on the planet, once calling themselves
the Fazi, while the other is completely unknown. There is no sign of an advanced
civilization, but apparently the Fazi have just discovered warp technology,
which thoroughly confuses Archer and his crew, especially T'Pol. Apparently, the
Fazi have a very structured livelihood, everything is strictly regulated, and
the slightest misstep can offend them, as Archer finds out.
In the meantime, an away team is sent to investigate the other race, who
inhabits a continent in the southern hemisphere of the planet and the encounter
has some rather nasty complications. Meanwhile Hoshi, has started some of the
crew on a Role Playing Game (RPG) and before long, there are three or four
members participating in it, helping to relieve the tension of the first contact
with the Fazi. This part of the story is one of the most interesting of the plot
lines and I, for one, hope this continues throughout the series.
I imagine this series, like TOS and TNG, will use a rotating writers pool,
but as long as some of the plots move through their different versions of the
stories, such as the RPG, then the reader shouldn't be disappointed one little
bit. Rather, there is a whole "new universe" to be discovered out there and
Archer and his crew are more then ready to explore it.
As with Enterprise: Broken Bow I have to give the first installment of
the series a 10! Read this book, you'll like it. Star Trek: Enterprise: By
The Book is published by Pocket Books and retails for $6.99 in the U.S. and
