Review by James Farmer (minor spoilers)
I have to say, I was presently surprised with this one. Taking the concepts
of Star Trek back to the beginning, without Kirk, Picard, or even Sisko and
Janeway, was a daring approach, but one that seems to have hit the right spot.
What a better way to show things got started, how the Prime Directive comes to
be, and how to lay the groundwork for a "legend", even if it is the Enterprise
that's highlighted here. Sure, the crew is important as well, but to see the
Enterprise in a much different version is startling enough, wouldn't you agree?
Here we all hoped to see a version of the Kirk Enterprise, and what we got
instead is something that looks like a matchbox car! Seriously, all I've seen is
the cover of the book, but I must admit, I like it!
Anyway, I genuinely liked the story and eagerly anticipate the viewing of the
series one of these days. The characters seem to well thought out and I
especially like the "love/hate" relationship between Archer and T'Pol. I think
the interaction gives us a much better insight into the relationship in the
future between Spock and Kirk, and makes you appreciate what Archer has to go
through, blaming the Vulcans for holding Earth back from advancement to the
stars. Yes, I look forward to the developing relationship between these two.
For a new series I had to consider how to rate a completely new idea for this
series and I've gladly decided that this first effort deserves a 10!
If Pocket Books decides to do Enterprise as a series, I can only hope that
this line is as good as the others.
Enterprise: Broken Bow is published by Pocket Books, and retails for
$19.95 in the U.S. and $29.95 in Canada.
